Picnicking 101

Picnicking 101

There's something about eating outside that makes everything taste better. Maybe it's the sun, maybe it's the company, or maybe it's a change of scenery. Whatever it is, a good picnic doesn't require much, just a little planning and the right things in your bag.

Start by thinking about what you actually want to eat. The best picnic food is simple food, the kind that tastes good whether it's warm or cold. You can get everything you need in your farm box delivery — a crusty baguette, your favorite cheese, whatever cured meats look good, and some seasonal veggies. Add fresh fruit, a few crackers, and you've got a meal that requires almost no preparation. This is the sweet spot of picnic food!

Drinks can be just as easy, too. Wine pairs naturally with cheese and bread, and if you're bringing a bottle, an Out of the Woods wine tote keeps it safe without being bulky. Aside from wine, bring along other refreshing outdoor drinks like sparkling water and fresh juice, or even cold brew coffee.

If you're packing a lunch-style picnic with food that needs to stay cool, an Out of the Woods paper sack cooler has you covered. It's designed to keep meals fresh throughout the day without the weight of a traditional cooler, and it holds enough for a small group. Toss in some Marley's Monsters reusable snack bags for anything you want separate or items you might snack on later, like berries or cut veggies. They're machine washable, so you can use them again and again.

For sandwiches you've made ahead, a Bee's Wrap sandwich wrap keeps everything together without plastic. Build your perfect sandwich, fold the corners, wrap the string around the wooden button, and you're done. The best part is you can use the same wrap for dozens of picnics.

(P.S. Don't forget the napkins! We love the ones from Dot & Army.)

If you're heading somewhere with trees or open space, bring along Breathe People's flower collecting board. It's an easy way to turn a walk into something creative and interactive. Pick wildflowers as you go and slowly build a small bouquet. By the time you sit down to eat, you have flowers on the table and a memory of the walk that got you there.

A good picnic starts with choosing what to bring, where to go, who to invite. By the time you're sitting outside with a plate of good cheese and bread in front of you, you'll realize the little bit of planning was worth it. ⚘
