In the 1920s, a young Italian immigrant named Anthony A. Bianco pushed a cart through New York City’s busy streets, selling produce. His entrepreneurial spirit quickly outgrew the pushcart, and his frequent trips to California to source grapes convinced him that the Golden State was where his family’s future lay. Shortly thereafter, Anthony moved his wife and eight children to the San Joaquin Valley to be closer to the vineyards that supplied his business.
When Anthony passed away in 1967, his four sons were determined to honor their father’s legacy. They pooled their resources and bought a few dozen acres of land in the southern San Joaquin Valley, and named their new venture Anthony Vineyards, after their father.
In 2002, they pioneered organic grape production long before organic produce became mainstream. Walk through their vineyards and you’ll see innovation at every turn. Their gable trellis system positions grapes at eye level, allowing workers to care for and harvest fruit without constantly bending over while providing crucial shade during California’s scorching summer months.
Between each row, carpets of barley contribute nutrients to the soil, moderate temperature and water retention, and provide homes for beneficial ladybugs that naturally control aphids and other pests.
Their precision irrigation system monitors moisture down to the drop, ensuring each vine receives exactly what it needs. Vines begin life as carefully grafted saplings, spending years in nursery conditions before being replanted and trained to follow the trellis system. After years of meticulous care, they’re finally ready to produce grapes worthy of the Anthony Vineyards name.
Today, more than 50 years later, Domenick “Cookie” Bianco still oversee daily operations, with the next generation already working alongside him in the family business.
From that pushcart in 1920s New York to today’s organic vineyards, Anthony Vineyards represents more than just agricultural success, it is a testament to how determination, family values, and willingness to innovate can create something truly lasting in American soil.
