Lucky Dog Cuisine

Lucky Dog Cuisine

Eating a variety of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and high quality protein isn’t just for people! Janice Elenbaas co-founded Lucky Dog Cuisine after having fed her own dogs fresh whole food recipes for years. “What lucky dogs,” her friends would say, upon hearing what great food she provided them.

After a long career in health care, Janice transitioned to making human-grade, minimally processed dog food for people who were looking for a better way to feed their furry family members.

From rigorous testing with the Department of Agriculture to gathering input from professionals in companion animal nutrition to make sure the formulations met the nutritional levels established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), Janice prepared for and launched Lucky Dog Cuisine. She created recipes that are complete and balanced for any stage of life and made with ingredients like humanely raised grass-fed beef and pork, hormone-free turkey, whole grains, real cheese and yogurt, and certified GMO-free fruits and vegetables. They use only people-quality ingredients and no preservatives or fillers.

Lucky Dog food is prepared by hand, gently cooked to preserve nutrients, frozen and shipped in one-pound packages that you can simply thaw and serve. Janice educates pet owners that, while convenient, dry kibble can often sit in a bag for a long time collecting bacteria and fungus, as well as experiencing breakdown of nutrients and rancidity of the added fats. Many commercial pet food processors use meat by-products and cook the kibble at high temperatures which breaks down enzymes and proteins and removes moisture, then they add back colors, synthetic nutrients and preservatives.

A diet of whole foods retains moisture and essential nutrients that can be absorbed and digested without stress on your dog’s system. In order to transition from dry kibble to a wet food without creating digestive problems for your dog takes about a week. Janice recommends making the change gradually, replacing the dry food with wet a little at a time. Once you’ve made the switch, varying the food by rotating flavors of wet meals is fine and your dog is bound to enjoy the different textures and flavors as well as benefit from an assortment of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and phytonutrients.

Lucky Dog Cuisine supports a number of nonprofits such as Guiding Eyes for the Blind, The Humane Society of the United States and ASPCA. They also partner with Food Animal Concerns Trust to provide Livestock Guardian Dogs and training to independent family farmers that allow these farmers to humanely raise poultry in open pasture on their farms.
