Know Your Farmer: Rebbl

In 2011, Dave Batstone set out to find a creative solution to the human trafficking problem in Peru. Through his non-profit, Not For Sale, he already had accumulated nearly 11 years of experience in raising money through anti-trafficking awareness campaigns. However, through his organization’s efforts, he learned that nearly everything that consumers buy contributes to forced labor and exploitation.
What was missing from the market was reliable, sustainable and safe products that contribute to the solution rather than the problem. Batstone brought together investors, agronomists and other global thought-leaders to come up with a business idea that would uplift at-risk communities around the world. He partnered with Palo Hawken, who had experience in the natural products industry, and together they started Rebbl.

Rebbl is an acronym for roots, extracts, berries, bark, and leaves. Rebbl utilizes these high-quality ingredients and their healing properties to create delicious elixirs. Each of their certified organic elixirs features a blend of super herbs and coconut milk, resulting in a creamy, indulgent and nourishing beverage that consumers can not only enjoy, but that they can feel good about. As Rebbl’s product line has grown, so has their impact.

Impactful Sourcing

Rebbl’s main objective is still to create products that uplift vulnerable communities. They accomplish this by being very involved and knowledgeable about their supply chain, and sourcing from suppliers that utilize fair and honest practices. Rebbl sources ingredients from over 30 countries and exclusively works with suppliers that have strong relationships with their growers. This creates jobs that support the wellbeing and economy of the local farming communities. By providing jobs and economic opportunity, community members are not only being empowered and educated, but they are less vulnerable to human trafficking and exploitation. Many of Rebbl’s supplier partners also offer additional community development programs such as clean water projects, infrastructure development, and education programs. Consumers can find detailed information about the origins of Rebbl’s ingredients on their website.

Impactful Contributions

From the beginning, Rebbl has committed to donating 2.5% of net sales of every bottle sold to Not For Sale, Batstone’s non-profit organization. This money goes towards preventing exploitation, generating awareness, and supporting individuals. Since partnering with Rebbl, Not For Sale has gone on to partner with other entrepreneurs to create more products that feed revenue back into communities. This model allows for job creation and stable income for at-risk populations. Since 2007, Not For Sale has supported 20,000 survivors and at-risk individuals from over 40 countries worldwide. Their services have expanded to offer long-term housing, education, medical care, legal services, counseling, and job training programs.

Impactful Sustainability Practices

Rebbl recognizes that businesses play a critical role in making positive climate impact and that there is a clear link between climate change and supply chains. Rebbl commits to making transparent and sustainable choices when it comes to transportation, packaging, agriculture, deforestation, and food waste. Some examples of this are seen in Rebbl’s packaging, which is currently undergoing changes from virgin plastic to 100% post-consumer recycled plastic resin. Furthermore, Rebbl is a leading member of OSC2 (One Step Closer 2 an Organic Sustainable Community), a group of environmentally focused natural products brands that work together to make action-oriented steps towards sustainability.
