We’ve been enjoying the beautiful clear skies and rising temperatures here in California. It’s time to open up your windows, clear out the stale air, and replace it with a fresh clean fragrance. To fill your home with the warm welcoming scents of spring, we suggest these easy, natural, DIY air fresheners.
1. Essential Oils
We love essential oils because they don't contain the chemicals or allergens that we often find in common air fresheners. One of the easiest ways to use essential oils is with a diffuser. In fact, we love our diffusers so much that many of us us them here in the office as well as at home!If you don’t have an oil diffuser, you can easily make a DIY room spray using essential oils. We recommend filling a 4 ounce spray bottle with distilled water, adding a splash of rubbing alcohol, vodka, or unscented witch hazel, and about 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. Mix well and spray to naturally scent your home!
2. Spring Simmering Pots
There are countless combinations you can simmer in water on the stove to fill your home with light, fresh scents. Simply place your ingredients in a small pot with enough water to cover the ingredients and simmer over low heat. When you’re done, you can store the mixture in a mason jar to reuse later. Keep it refrigerated for up to three weeks. Just make sure to set a timer so you remember to turn the stove off. These are some of our favorite spring combinations:- 1 sliced lemon, a few sprigs of fresh rosemary, and a teaspoon of vanilla
- 1 sliced grapefruit, fresh mint, and a few slices of peeled ginger
- A few sliced limes, fresh mint, fresh thyme, and a few slices of peeled ginger
- Orange slices, lemon slices, dried or fresh lavender, and fresh thyme
3. Dried Lavender
Lavender is often used in aromatherapy for its ability to calm. It is know to reduce stress, promote relaxation, and even help you fall asleep at bedtime.Dried lavender on the stalks makes a beautiful dried flower arrangement that looks and smells
amazing. You can place it in a vase on its own for a rustic farmhouse feel, or add it to an existing arrangement for a little scent boost.
Dried lavender buds can be placed into a small fabric pouch (or DIY your own using fabric from an old cotton or linen tshirt) and set in clothing drawers or hung in closets for a fresh, clean smell. We also carry these Lavender Sachets from elizabethW that you can add to your Farm Box deliveries.
4. Repurpose Your Citrus Scraps
Before you throw away your citrus rinds, put those scraps to work! You can place a few pieces of citrus peel in your garbage disposal to deodorize your kitchen sink. If you’re using larger pieces or the ends of the fruit, you may want to simply turn the garbage disposal on for 10 - 15 seconds then remove the citrus and place in your compost or garbage to avoid any potential plumbing issues.5. Flowers
There is nothing like a bouquet of fresh flowers to brighten up a room – and your day! Many flowers blooming this time of year offer fragrant and delicious smells too. You can also add fresh flowers to your Farm Box deliveries. And to learn how to enjoy your flowers for as many days of gorgeousness as possible, click here follow these 5 easy steps.
