Your cheering has been heard, STRAWBERRIES are the champion of our NCAA-style bracketed March Madness Produce Playoffs!! We’re celebrating our winner by sharing some fun facts, helpful tips and our favorite recipes featuring strawberries below.

Despite their sweet flavor, strawberries have a surprisingly low sugar content, but rich in many health promoting phyto-nutrients, minerals and vitamins that are essential for optimum health.  They are an excellent source of vitamin C, B6, A and E.

Strawberries are a great snack on their own or a perfect addition to your morning cereal or smoothie. Top sliced strawberries with some freshly whipped cream for a quick and simple dessert.

Fruity Fun Facts

1. Current research suggest that eating just 8 strawberries a day can improve heart health, lower blood pressure, reduce inflammation, reduce the risk of cancers and even improve cognitive function.

2. Native Americans introduces the Colonists to strawberries. They crushed berries were mixed with cornmeal and baked into bread. After trying this bread, Colonists developed their own version of the recipe and created Strawberry Shortcake.

3. If all the strawberries produced in California in one year were laid berry to berry, they would go around the world 15 times.

4. The strawberry, a member of the rose family, is the only fruit with seeds on the outside. On average, there are 200 seeds on each berry.

Salutary Storage Tips

1. Fresh berries can be highly perishable. We have found that storing them in the coldest part of the refrigerator, in the clamshell container, will help maintain high humidity and keep them fresh longer.

2. If you are not ready to eat them right away, freeze your strawberries. This will keep their flavor preserved for months!

3. Do not wash your strawberries until you are ready to use them! Washing will add moisture and will cause the berries to spoil more rapidly.

4. When you are ready to enjoy your berries, gently rinse them with the caps still on. After washing, remove the caps and enjoy!
