That alone is something to celebrate. As we celebrate the 35th anniversary of our own organic farm, we see this change happening every day, and it both humbles and inspires us.
As you share recipes, stories and photos from your own kitchen, we get to experience first-hand what it means to be a CSA – and how amazing it is to see what grows in our fields appear on your tables in the meals you share with family and friends.
Recently, we had the honor of speaking with local acclaimed cookbook author and journalist, Janet Fletcher about her book Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America’s Farmers. A gorgeous and tempting read, Janet's cookbook serves up 150 recipes for making the most of the fresh ingredients in a CSA box or farmer's market.
She autographed a book for us – and we're hoping to give it to one of you, our Farm Fresh To You CSA fans!

ReplyDeleteMoved here from Northern Michigan a year ago, where I always had a fairly large garden (I LOVE to garden), and here we live in an home that only accommodates a small garden, and tho still enjoying that, it is nice to get my fresh organic food and trying out new things that California has to offer. I have come to the conclusion that California has some of the BEST fruit I have ever tasted, along with many other foods! THANK YOU for your service!

ReplyDeleteI love finding a box of freshly picked organic produce on my step and immediately incorporating it into what my family eats that day. From slicing up the apples for my daughter, to creating a salad for lunch, to whipping up fun combinations of baby food for my babies. I love knowing that not only is the food safe (organic) for my family, but that the only way to get it any fresher would be to pick it myself! Thanks for doing the hard work for me so I can simply enjoy!

I feel great serving meals to my kids with fresh fruits and vegetables with amazing flavor that I know have nothing in them that is potentially harmful!

ReplyDelete1. I love that everything is organic and grown on a farm that keeps in touch.
2. I love the convenience of not only having delicious, healthy produce delivered to my front door, but how they also do the choosing of the produce for me. No more looking through the store and wondering what to get.
3. I'm more inspired to try new things (especially in salads!) when they're right there in my kitchen!
4. I also love that the produce is always top quality - no more bitter zucchini or squash, for example.
The BEST part of belonging to CSA is getting what I call the "suprise gift box" at my front door filled with FRESH and YUMMY produce. Never knowing what is inside the box always makes me smile and I am filled with excitement as I open it up, see what goodies are inside and then read the newsletter and recipes!!! My family has tried new fruits and veggies that I would never buy in the grocery stores and we have made some wonderful meals. I tell all my friends about it and they get so excited just hearing about the "suprise gift box"!!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many great things about belong to a CSA, including 1) the fun of getting a box each week and seeing all the wonderful produce inside 2) Feeling some connection and allegiance to "our" farm 3) Being able to visit the farm 1-2x/year to see the workers in action, the layouts of the fields and orchards, and of course, to pick food directly from the vine! 4) Having great-tasting and healthy food.

ReplyDelete1) I am able to consistently and easily eat fresh fruits and vegetables as part of my regular diet,
2) I don't have to worry about the quality and taste - it's consistently good,
3) I love knowing that I am supporting local agriculture,
4) The produce comes to my home so I don't have to spend time shopping and running around to various markets,
5) I love the variety.

We love getting produce that we wouldn't necessarily pick up at the store. It has allowed us to expand our food horizons. It is wonderful knowing we're supporting local farmers and the organic fruit and veggies taste AMAZING!!!

ReplyDeleteI love the creative challenge of responding to whatever arrives in the box and crafting something delicious from the contents. Both the CSAs I have been a part of, introduced me to knew fruits and veggies, and have made me a more adventurous cook! It is also satisfying to cook things when they are in season, which is sadly not really a part of our modern eating experience.

As soon as I open the box, I begin thinking about what delicious fare I can create for my family using those ingredients. It goes great with my macrobiotic regimen to eat locally grown organic produce that has been delivered right to my door. So nice not to have to schlepp to the store!

We seldom have time to visit the local grocery store for organic produce, and when we do, the produce is rarely locally-grown. The CSA box, however, is delivered every couple of weeks, and is loaded with locally-grown, organic produce.

I also love that it's peaked my oldest child's interest in learning about where food comes from, and in visiting farms and planting her own food.
ReplyDeleteWe really enjoy receiving the box of seasonal fruits and veges. This has been very helpful in training my husband and I to eat seasonally. We have our own garden and FFTY gives us a lot of what we don't have and more of what do. I've been forced to come up with meals containing items I've never tried before, and that is a good thing. And everything is fresher than anything you purchase in a super market. Tastes sooooo good.

We get to try foods (and recipes!) that are new to us or outside our comfort zone - with great results! (Kale chips - who knew?) Delivered right to our door front, it couldn't be easier, and even the cardboard boxes the produce comes in get reused by Farm Fresh To You. I also love the stories that accompany my box every two weeks, written by a man who clearly loves the land.

Somehow we never really used to get around to shopping regularly for organic produce. And the prices... :-{

The food I receive with each deliver tastes better than anything I can find in grocery stores, and I enjoy having a relationship the the with community of folks who produce my food. Knowing where my food comes from, and rolling with the changes of the season, while still being able to choose veggies I like (and am not allergic to, thanks for that) is a pleasure. Buying local, and sustainably is a priority for me - and it's a bonus to have folks over who exclaim "this is the best pear I've had" when we share meals with family and friends. ReplyDeleteIt's a small thrill twice a month to open the front door early in the morning, bring the box in, and exclaim over each type of produce. We like buying and eating local and organic, and presume that the workers who pick, pack, and deliver our fruits and vegetables are treated well in the fields and by the farmers.
ReplyDeleteI love that my CSA deliveries help bring some balance to my otherwise very busy and hectic life. The fact is, I wouldn't otherwise get to the store to buy fresh produce with my schedule. My CSA deliveries give me an easy and affordable way to maintain a healthy diet. I also love knowing where my food comes from and the surprise and challenge of learning to cook with ingredients that I'm not used to or may not have bought on my own.

There is so much to love about our CSA box. We love how good our favorite fruits and vegetables taste and learning how to prepare and enjoy less familiar ones. However, my favorite thing is sitting down and reading the weekly letter from Thaddeus to my kids. Each week they wait to hear what "our farmer" has been doing. It is a valuable connection to our food and the PEOPLE who provide it.

ReplyDeleteBeing part of a cooperative effort to maintain an alternative to the ever-expanding commercial agriculture industry, and encourage food production based on the health of the product (and the relationship of the farmer to the consumer) rather than the profit of the corporation, regardless of social and ecological damage.

ReplyDeleteI have been a vegetarian for nearly 35 years - fresh produce is the center of my well-being. Raised in Germany where either public transportation, my bike or feet got me around, LA was a daunting place to live in initially, esp. when my local farmers' market here in L.A. set up shop somewhere else. Home delivery from nearby farms seemed to be the only good choice. I can participate in the regional & seasonal, thus keep my body healthy, and my mind at ease, b/c environmentally I support our beautiful blue green world. It's the most precious we've got.

ReplyDeleteWhat I love is being able to introduce my classroom of 3rd graders to a variety of different things. Every year my classroom cooks recipes from the box that we receive and the children are able to see what comes from a farm is not only healthy but can be a yummy side dish, main course, or a delicious dessert! They are just as excited to open the box as I am because they know they are going to the Food Lab to make something very tasty!
ReplyDeleteI love CSA for many reasons... one - the weekly delivery is like "Merry Christmas meets Iron Chef". I get to receive a box of goodies and give me solar power when I eat it's contents. another - I came to southern calif in the mid 60's when it still had so much farm land and it stings that people value convenience stores more than the cycle of life in farming. three - I love that this is a second generation farm that has survived the last few decades.... four - Thaddeus's newletters remind me of one of my great life mentors, Brian Murray at Westwood Flower Garden... His customers not only got pretty flowers and plants but a bit of an education about what it took to have quality cultivated and delivered. I enjoy the spirit of your business as it makes for a wholistic life. Bless you all! Thank you All. Before this journey, we ate like everyone else, non-organic and then something happened, we noticed that food tasted different! Wait... Food tasted like something, not processed, not dead sitting on a shelf, not filled with water, but now what we were eating had flavor! I am so happy when the box arrives and look forward to learning to cook and share with friends and family! Our friends notice the flavors and I love talking about the big box that shows up on the doorstep and makes me smile!

ReplyDeleteIt's like Christmas, but better than toys: Fresh fruit and vegetables--than I can trust to be organic--arrive to give me a fun challenge to prepare them as healthfully and appetizingly as possible.
ReplyDeleteI love not having to haul groceries up the hill so often even though it's good exercise. Sometimes it's a nice break to have groceries delivered to your door. It takes the pressure off significantly of meal planning.
ReplyDeleteFarm Fresh makes me feel absolutely spoiled! A lovely selection of freshly picked produce in a handsome well packed box (offering old favourites and introducing new friends), delivered right to my front door. And it's ORGANIC! Best of the best! If I'm not sure where to store something, I look on the FFTY website. If I don't know how to prepare something, I look for recipes on the FFTY website. If there's something I really would rather not have in my box (such as tomatoes right now as I grow my own), I just go to the FFTY website and put them on my exclusion list. And I'm supporting California agriculture! I'm in produce heaven! Thank you Farm Fresh!!

the different items get me out of a rut, and inspire me to try new recipes;
the fact that I'm supporting a local farmer doing their job in a sustainable way.
